Tooling service and calibration at Lumwana

Onsite calibration and repair for a large-scale open pit operation a long way from anywhere that used to do this work.

Lumwana, North-Western Province

Lumwana is a large open-pit copper operation west of Solwezi, working a sulphide orebody with a big truck and shovel fleet and a concentrator. Its remoteness is the defining operational fact: the further a site is from a workshop, the more spare tooling it has to carry, and the more a dependable turnaround is worth.

Served from the Copperbelt, west of Solwezi on the Mwinilunga road.

The cost of distance, in tooling terms

Remote operations compensate for slow tooling turnaround the only way they can, by buying more tools. A site that knows a wrench will be gone for six weeks holds three wrenches. That spare fleet is working capital sitting in a store, and it is also three tools to calibrate instead of one.

Bringing calibration and repair to site changes the arithmetic. Operations that move from an export cycle to a local one can usually carry less spare tooling within a year, because the reason the spares existed has gone.

Common questions

Is onsite calibration practical this far out?

Yes, and it is the point. Visits are planned and batched so the travel is done once and the whole fleet is covered, rather than a tool at a time.
